Tips for your family and friends

How to get on well with friends and family

You will be surprised: Your friends and family will notice how easy it is to speak with you again – but they will take longer to realize that you are wearing hearing aids.

Regaining the courage to engage in lively conversations again might seem as a challenge to you. Relax, we can offer you a variety of hints how you can help your loved ones and yourself:

Speech

  • Tell your conversational partners that shouting is not necessary.
  • You can advise them to speak more clearly and naturally, and, if necessary, more slowly.
  • You might feel more comfortable if you close the distance between you and your partner.

Focus

  • You might find it helpful to keep eye contact during conversation.
  • When you want to get more attention, you can try and tap your partners’ shoulder or arm.
  • You can ask them to do the same.
  • Even people without hearing loss do not like to hold conversations in noisy surroundings.

Respect your limits

Long conversations can be tiring. Respect your own limits. As soon as you notice that you are getting tired or exhausted, tell your conversational partner so.

Be patient with yourself. You will notice a daily improvement.
